These simple Go To Brownies are made in one bowl and are full of chocolate goodness. After trying many, many brownie recipes over the years, I took what I learned and created my own. This is the recipe I go to time and again, and it has become the basis for most of my brownie desserts. I love that it is made in one bowl with ingredients I always have on hand because I am somewhat lazy (I love shortcuts, and hate extra steps or washing excessive amounts of dishes), and it comes together quickly when that brownie craving hits. It has everything I’m looking for in a brownie: crinkly top, fudgy/gooey, loaded with chocolate.

Which type of cocoa powder should I use, and does it matter?

Stay tuned for a future blog post where I experiment with a variety of cocoa powders, but the short answer is that I generally use good old Hershey’s cocoa powder.

Can this recipe be reduced?

I bake this recipe in a metal 9×13 pan, and my family can eat that up in no time. If, however, you aren’t as addicted to chocolate as I am, I found that cutting the recipe in half fills an 8″ pan nicely.

Simple, one bowl, fudgy brownies loaded with chocolate!

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups granulated sugar

1 cup all purpose flour

3/4 cup cocoa powder

3/4 tsp kosher salt

1/2 tsp baking powder

3/4 cups chocolate chips

1 cup (2 sticks) butter melted

4 eggs

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350

Line 9×13 metal baking pan with parchment leaving overhang at the sides for easy lifting.

Stir dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl.  

Add wet ingredients and stir until incorporated.

Spread into 9×13 pan and bake for approximately 18 minutes.  Brownies are done when just set in the middle, slightly puffed, and just beginning to pull away from the edges.  

Notes

*I like my brownies on the underdone side.  Brownies will continue to bake once removed from the oven, so be careful not to over bake them.  Test brownies for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center which should come out with moist crumbs when done.

*I have added anywhere from 1/2 to 1 cup of chocolate chips to this recipe with good success.  Instead of, or in addition to the chocolate chips, you can add peanut butter or mint chips, or nuts.  Just keep the total volume of mix ins between 1/2 and 1 cup.

    Darla’s Just Desserts Bakehouse recipes to the rescue!! A last-minute request came in from my son this morning for me to please make brownies that he could bring with him to share during a visit with his girlfriend and her family. He needed to leave in about an hour or so. No worries! These go to brownies, with simple ingredients and detailed instructions fit the bill! This dessert was ready quickly, and was chocolaty and delicious!! They are my ‘go to brownies’ from now on! Thank you, Darla.

On a recent trip to Austin my daughter and I visited an adorable candy store that sold toffee pretzels. They were ok, but it was a small pretzel twist for about $4, and the toffee was a bit soft and stale. She and I both agreed that it would be better as a pretzel rod, and it needed to be fresh!

Fast forward, and these are ready for Valentine’s Day. For about $10 total and 10 minutes of your time you can make an entire batch of these. While I made the toffee from scratch, a heath bar works just as well. 

You need a bag of pretzel rods, some chocolate for melting, crushed toffee, and some white chocolate melted and tinted with food coloring to make it festive. Dip a pretzel rod into melted chocolate, roll in crushed toffee, and set it on parchment paper as it cools. Melt and tint white chocolate, and drizzle over the cooled pretzel rods.
